Foreigners cannot enter Vietnam without a visa. Tourist visas are usually granted at Vietnamese embassies and consulates abroad (see addresses section).
Business travelers should apply for a visa through a Vietnamese sponsoring agency, providing them with the following details:
- Full name
- Date and place of birth
- Profession
- Passport number
- Date of issue and expiry
- Nationality (original and present)
- Date and point of entry to Vietnam.
  • The sponsor will forward these details to the Vietnamese Immigration Authorities. Approval for the visit may take 7-10 days.
  • Business visas may be for up to six months and allow for multiple entry.

  • The relevant Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate is notified by Telex of the Visa approval. When notified, take the Telex number and 2-4 passport photos with you to collect your visa.

The following visa fees are charged:

  • Single entry & transit visa: US$25

  • Extension of single entry visa: US$10

  • Multiple entry: US$40-US$100

  • Extension of multiple entry visa: US$16.

A group tour with a minimum of five persons traveling from Bangkok can obtain visas at the port of entry. Tour operators need to co-operate with authorized agents in Vietnam who charge approximately US$35 person.

CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION

On arrival in Vietnam, you must complete white and blue duplicate arrival-departure forms. The blue copy is to be kept with your passport at all times. Hotels, guest houses and private hosts must register overnight guests with the local police and these blue forms are essential for this purpose.
Incoming visitors must also fill out duplicate yellow and white customs declaration forms. The yellow copy is to remain with your passport until departure. Do not lose it!
On the yellow and white Customs Forms you are expected to declare:
- Cameras, camcorders and other electric equipments not for personal use
- Currency:  over US$3,000
- Jewellery:  not for personal use
- Video tapes:  (they may be kept for a few days and screened)
Duty free allowances are 200 cigarettes, two litres of alcohol,  perfume and jewellery for personal use.

BANNED MATERIAL
Vietnam has strict laws on bringing  anti-government literature, pornography, firearms and weapons into the country. CDs and tapes are often retained for screening, but will be returned after a few days. It is illegal to remove antiques from Vietnam. When buying handicrafts, especially those that look old, ask the retailer for a receipt and declaration that the item may be exported.

Currency

The currency issued by the Vietnam State Bank is the dong (abbreviated "d" or VND), which is used uniformly throughout the country. There are presently bank notes in circulation in dominations of:

100 dong, 200 dong, 500 dong, 1,000 dong, 2,000 dong
5,000 dong, 10,000 dong, 20,000 dong, 50,000 dong, 100,000 dong

Traveller's cheques and credit cards (American Express, Visa, Mastercard) are exchanged for Vietnamese dong at the banks. Cards can be used in travel agencies, hotels, and major restaurants. US currency is exchanged for Vietnamese dong and treasury notes in banks, exchange bureaus, hotels, and jewellery shops. The exchange rate always changes. When leaving the country, remaining Vietnamese currency can be exchanged for US dollars at the exchange bureau at the airport.
Post & Tel

Post Services:
Regular postal  services are available. You can find a post office in every town or village (the sign will say Buu Dien). All regular services such as Airmail, parcel services, money transfer, stamp selling (highly recommended for collectors !!), calling cards and many more. In addition, there are some new specialized services:

- Express Mail Service (EMS). The domestic EMS ensures that letters and small parcels are delivered within 24-48 hours. International EMS is associated with nearly 30 countries worldwide, with a delivery time ranging from 2 to 10 days.

Air mail and small parcels, however, are subjected to additional charges.
- Express money transfer: Money is delivered to the receiver within 24 hours.
- Flower delivery: can be ordered by telephone. This service delivers messages such, as greetings or condolences, together with flowers, money, or goods (allowed in circulation) to the receiver by request of the sender.

- Couriers. Most of the international courier services are operating in Vietnam for many years. The charges are higher than other countries, so please check with different services to obtain the best rate.

Telecommunication Services:

- International long-distance calls (direct):
To make an international direct dial (IDD) call,  first dial the international prefix (00) followed by the country code, area code, and the local number. If  you are unable to contact the requested number, dial 110 for operator assistance. For example:
           to Israel  : 00 972 area code+number

There are some special services (long distance carriers) which will make the calls cheaper. This can be done when using calling cards or private phones. All you do is dial a pre-fix number of the carriers BEFORE the international access code, for example: To Israel  :  178 00 972 3 555 4444

-
Domestic long-distance calls:

To place a domestic long-distance call, first dial the national prefix (0) followed by the area code and local number. If you are unable to reach the required number, dial 101 for operator assistance. The cheap long distance carries apply for domestic routes as well.

- Facsimile (Fax):

Fax machines are quickly proliferating in Vietnam. Public and registered fax machines are available in hotels, businesses, and public offices.

- Mobile phones:
In Vietnam there are 2 main mobile phone operators with good coverage of the country  VINAPHONE & VMS. Both are operating on GSM 900 MGHz and have international roaming agreements with many countries (please check with your service provider). However, the roaming charges are VERY expensive. So please note this point when using it for outgoing calls. There is no charge for incoming calls . Soon a third operator SAIGON POSTEL will offere CDMA services in the south of the country but this service is very limited at present.
You can buy a local SIM CARD for just a few Dollars in every city, which will allow much cheaper outgoing calls and provide you with a local number for use. The account can be charged at any time and is very popular with tourists and locals as well.

- INTERNET:                                                                                                        The internet services are available in Vietnam for a few years now with standard and now also ISDN connections. You can either use your own computer or use the hotel's business center to access the internet. You can also use many of the Internet coffee shops which are spread through out the country, even in remote areas.
PLEASE NOTE:
There are some restricts in Vietnam concerning pornography and  anti government material, so please do not abuse the Vietnamese hospitality !!

Local and international phonecards, mobile phones, pagers, and database Netlink & Citylink  services are also available.
- The "1080, 1088, 108" service is for inquiries by phone on socio-economic and cultural information.
- This service also runs an advertisements and business self introduction scheme.
